20/20 Special on steroid use in pro athletes
In the video a newscaster interviews Doctor Gary Wadler one of the chairmen of the WADA or World Anti- Doping Agency. The newscaster also interviews Dr. Norman Fost a bioethicist at the University of Wisconsin. In the video Wadler insists that steroids cause a increase in "roid rage" or increase in temper also suicide, and brain cancer. Although Wadler has no physical proof that steroids can cause anything except for "maybe" hair loss, male breasts, and heart disease, he still insists it should be illegal. Frost's argument is that the Anti- steroid movement is filled with hype and hysteria. He explains there is nothing wrong with taking steroids, and that all drugs have side effects. According to him most side effects are either minor, or reversible or not life threatening. His other argument is steroids would be a lot safer if they came out from under the counter and were supervised by doctors. Frost goes into explaining how pro athletes should not be scrutinized for using steroids, because its not cheating. He gives the example of Tiger Woods lasic eye surgery and the example of the extra light weight swim suit used by an olympic gold medalist.
